Orthopedy
Orthopedics is a medical sub-discipline of surgery that deals with diseases of the musculoskeletal system. These include health disorders of the bones, joints, muscles or tendons. Orthopedics is operated by specialists in orthopedics and trauma surgery, who are also called orthopedists for short. They use products from medical technology in orthopedics. A variety of acute and chronic diseases are treated in orthopedics. These include arthrosis, bone necrosis, ligament tears, herniated discs, heel spurs, sprains, pointed and spreading feet, tennis elbow, infections of the joints, lumbago, hip dysplasia, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, muscle tears, osteoporosis, whiplash, fractures of the collarbones, ruptured bones, the apples.
An orthopedic surgeon specializes in diseases of the bones, joints and muscles of the body. These specialists are trained to treat a wide variety of ailments affecting the body's joints and spine. A physician in this specialty will recommend treatment options to rehabilitate or prevent the progression of the disease. The goal of an orthopaedic surgeon is to restore a patient's mobility and strength, while minimizing any risks or complications. To become an orthopedic surgeon, students must complete four years of college, a five-year residency, and a one to three-year specialized education.
As an increasingly sophisticated field, orthopedics is benefitting from advances in technology. New computer vision and image processing tools are improving surgical techniques, reducing the burden on surgeons and patients. Surgical simulation and patient-specific measurement are two key applications of advanced computer vision in the field. Implant design and surface reconstruction can be aided by 3D models derived from imaging data. Both medical applications and patient safety are impacted by these advances, making them essential to the future of orthopedic care.
As the use of computer vision grows in the field, new devices are being developed by physicians. Some doctors are even inventing medical products. In North America, Dr. Edward Harvey, an orthopedic surgeon, recognized an urgent patient need for an improved method of diagnosis for acute compartment syndrome (ACS), a potentially life-threatening muscle condition that usually develops 48 hours after a traumatic event. In response to this need, he designed the MY01 patient monitoring device, a wearable medical device that can detect the onset of ACS. Other entrepreneurs, such as Dr. Yair Feld, have developed an implantable system that limits pathologic fluid overload through a continuous clearance of systemic congestion.
While many physicians specialize in a particular area, orthopedic specialists have broad training in a number of fields. They can be part of a multidisciplinary team to treat poly-trauma cases, serve as consultants, and provide highly specialized care for athletes. In addition to surgery, orthopedic physicians can also perform emergency medicine and trauma care. Their training also gives them the skills necessary to perform complex procedures. They also train physicians in various reduction methods.
Early on in history, the field of orthopedics began with a young Welsh surgeon named Hugh Owen Thomas. The Welsh doctor, who practiced the discipline at an early age, developed a wide range of techniques and expanded the field of orthopedics. Today, a physician's training in orthopedics includes the diagnosis and correction of spinal deformities in both children and adults. It is a growing industry that employs highly qualified professionals.
As a physician, you will undergo tests that help determine the cause of your condition. During the test, a surgeon will examine your body to ensure that it is not suffering from an infection. In addition to these physical tests, he or she will examine the bones and joints in the affected area. In case of serious injuries, the surgeon may recommend surgery. If your orthopedic specialist believes that surgery is the only option, he or she will recommend the appropriate treatment for the problem.
