A Doctor of Podiatry (DPM) is the most specialized degree in the field of foot and ankle care. The practice is focused on the treatment of common foot and ankle disorders such as bunions, heel pain, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, corns, calluses, and sprains. This profession requires a specialized education, with a 4 year program devoted to a wide range of foot and ankle conditions.

Upon graduation from medical school, potential practitioners must complete postdoctoral training in a hospital or other health care facility to hone their skills in the field. Many universities have a residency program for podiatrists. These programs are typically held in hospitals that are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or the American Osteopathic Association. The programs last approximately three years and require students to complete a MCAT and cGPA.

After completing their graduate studies, prospective podiatrists must complete postdoctoral work to become licensed in their state. Most of these programs are three years long and focus on strengthening the medical skills of a practitioner. The duration of these postdoctoral programs varies widely, but is usually at least two years. During these three years, trainees gain clinical experience. In addition to clinical training, postdoctoral programs also provide opportunities to expand a practitioner's knowledge and practice.

The practice of podiatry has changed over the years, and with a growing geriatric population, innovative equipment is an essential part of the practice. Euroclinic products include ergonomically designed workstations and ergonomically designed chairs that put essential tools within arm's reach. In addition, the Euroclinic Caprice cart is an innovative podiatry cart that includes an instrument console on a flexible arm and an RPM rotational tool.

In New Zealand, the profession of podiatrists was first recognized in 1869. In the 1970s, it was renamed to Podiatry and required a three-year course of study. Its establishment was first in Petone and later moved to the Central Institute of Technology in Upper Hutt, Wellington. In 1976, the profession gained the legal right to use local anaesthetic. During this time, the practice of Podiatry expanded significantly.

The profession of podiatrists is a growing specialty in the United States. In the United States, the National Association of Chiropodists (NAC) was founded in 1912. Its name was changed to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) in 1983. The term "podiatric" was first used by M.J. Lewi of New York in 1917. Today, DPMs are sought by many patients suffering from foot and ankle disorders.

A doctor of podiatry is a physician who specializes in lower extremity conditions. Using laboratory tests and x-rays, a DPM diagnoses and treats injuries and prescribes medications and physical therapy. They collaborate with other health care professionals, including physicians of other specialties. There are several different types of DPMs, but most are qualified to practice in any area of the field.
