Implants and prostheses are artificial substitutes for body parts. They may be cosmetic or functional. Both types can be placed surgically. Unlike prostheses, implants are generally not removable. A patient can still wear a removable provisional prosthesis until the implant is fully healed. The final prosthesis is placed three months after the surgery. Patients are routinely followed up for three years for clinical and radiological evaluations.
Modern implants and prostheses are made from various materials, including titanium, plastic and ceramic. These materials have many advantages and disadvantages. For example, some prostheses can be positioned to correct an asymmetrical or crooked appearance. Other prosthetic devices have a higher risk of infection and require lengthy antibiotic treatment. A revision surgery is often required to replace a failed implant. In some cases, surgical repair may be necessary.
Implants and prostheses are a new medical technology that help people with various conditions. They restore lost or damaged body parts. For example, a bionic eye implant can help blind people regain their sense of sight. Hearing aids have also benefited from bionic research. In addition to implants, researchers have made breakthroughs in this field. While it is not entirely clear how bionic technologies will be used in the future, the progress made in recent years has been remarkable.
Another type of prosthetic implant is an electrical stimulator. This device sends electrical impulses to nerves in the brain to treat disorders. Orthopedic implants are both permanent and temporary. For joint replacement, permanent implants are placed in the joints like the hip, ankle, or knee. For fractured bones, a temporary implant can be used. In this case, a wire or plate is connected to the implant and the brace.
In addition to dental implants, there are electrical stimulators that send electrical impulses to the brain. These devices are used to stimulate nerves and treat diseases and conditions. However, implants are not permanent. A temporary prosthesis is a temporary device used for a specific purpose. The temporary implant is a surgical device that acts as a support for the bone during the healing process. This implant is not permanent. If it were to be removed, it would be removed and replaced by a temporary fix.
There are a variety of types of prostheses. Multiple implants are made of titanium and are used to replace the roots of missing teeth. The definitive prosthesis is either a single artificial tooth or a row of artificial teeth. A single prosthesis may be a crown that replaces a single tooth, while the other may be a bridge or multiple teeth. A permanent prosthesis is used to replace a full dental arch that has no teeth.
