General surgical instruments
Surgical instruments are the tools used in the operation of an individual or a group of individuals. Traditionally, instruments are made by assembling basic building blocks. These are often refined, and new versions are developed to improve on the original. During the design phase, surgical instruments must be non-toxic and durable. Blood tends to corrode and can leave stains on instruments. In addition, repeated washing and sterilization of surgical instruments can damage certain materials, which can harbor bacteria and stains. Today, surgeons are designing their own surgical instruments, a process influenced by governmental controls.
New instruments must be checked for quality control by the Central Sterile Supplies Department and three clinical engineers. In one study, about 15% of 4800 surgical instruments were found to have potential problems. Some instruments had machining burrs in tissue-holding regions, 71 instruments were ratcheted incorrectly, 34 instruments were defective in cutting action and 254 had no manufacturer's mark.
