Traumatology
Traumatology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, development, diagnosis and therapy of injuries and wounds.
The term trauma comes from the Greek and means "injury, wound". On the one hand, doctors use it to describe a damaging (traumatizing) effect on the organism (such as due to an accident or psychological injury), and on the other hand, the resulting damage (such as a broken bone, blood loss or psychosis). There are many different types of trauma. They can be triggered either by psychological, mechanical, physical or chemical influences.
Traumatology is a broad field and trauma doctors need to be qualified in many areas. This includes first aid at the scene of the accident, then emergency hospital treatment, and then surgical / orthopedic treatment. One of the most important tasks in trauma surgery is the treatment of injuries to the musculoskeletal system (such as fractures or muscle and tendon injuries). The transition from trauma surgeon to plastic surgeon is a smooth transition.
